The ruling BJP in Maharashtra and its ally Shiv Sena raced ahead as votes were counted on Monday after the opening round of civic polls, described as a "mini-election" in the middle of political sparring over the currency ban. Voting was held in 147 municipal areas and 17 Panchayat seats on Sunday.
