We need to move beyond just building toilets and focus on operating and maintaining these toilets, says Naina Lal Kidwai, Chairperson, India Sanitation Coalition. "What we also need to pay attention to is what goes under these toilets - Where does the sewage go? How are we treating this sewage?" The youth of the nation needs to take more interest in the sphere of sanitation, she says, adding that very few people specialise in sanitation today.
