China has committed $6.5 billion to finance the construction of a major nuclear power project in Pakistan's port city of Karachi as it seeks to strengthen ties with its strategic partner, Pakistani officials said.

The Pakistani military says it is training 8,000 additional people to protect the country's nuclear arsenal. The United States fears Pakistan's nuclear program could be vulnerable to penetration by Islamist militants at war with the West.
