Five more people have been arrested in connection with the Azad Maidan violence in Mumbai on August 11. So far 48 people have been arrested in the case, 24 of them since Tuesday evening.

Mumbai politician Raj Thackeray says he will defy a police order and will lead his party, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), in a march from Girgaum Chowpatty to the Azad Maidan, a distance of about five kms. The police has refused permission for Mr Thackeray's march; he has been allowed to hold his rally at Azad Maidan.

The Mumbai police, sources say, was warned that a protest organised on Saturday at the city's Azad Maidan ground would draw thousands of people, and that just before the protest began, a mob of nearly 1000 people, armed with knives and swords, was heading to the city's main train station, the Chhatrapti Shivaji Terminus (CST).

24 people have been arrested in Mumbai for Saturday's violence near Azad Maidan. Two people were killed and 55 others were injured after a protest over ethnic clashes in Assam turned violent there. Investigation is now on to determine if the violence was planned and the protesters were armed.
