Leopards are now the targets of tiger poachers in Uttarakhand. Thirty four of leopards have been killed so far this year. While some of them died of natural causes, a majority of these leopards were killed by poachers. Last year, the number of leopards killed stood at 134.

In a strongly worded letter to all tiger states across the nation, The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has said that henceforth all tiger and leopard deaths will be treated as 'poaching', unless otherwise proved beyond reasonable doubt.

The observation that India is losing its leopards faster than any other wild cat will soon be proved true as according to the latest report by the Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI) 356 leopards died across the country because of various causes last year alone. The data shows 52 per cent of the deaths were due to poaching.
