CPM chief Sitaram Yechury had lunch and a spent close to two hours on Sunday with former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee. The veteran leader had been expelled from the party in July 2008 for refusing to quit the Speaker's post as the Left withdrew support to the UPA government over the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Sitaram Yechury has been unanimously elected the new general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). His name was proposed for the post by outgoing party chief Prakash Karat and veteran S Ramachandran Pillai, who had initially been in the race for the post.

Kodiyari Balakrishnan was unanimously elected as the new state secretary of the CPM's Kerala unit. Mr Balakrishnan has been seen as a loyalist of Pinarayai Vijayan, the former CPM state secretary who is also Mr Achuthanandan's top political rival within the party.

Kerala's Opposition Leader and CPI (M) stalwart VS Achuthanandan staged a walkout of his party's three-day state conference in Alappuzha District. Sources said the veteran leader was miffed by severe criticism levelled against him by party workers.
