As we drove into the trouble zone, the calm almost deceived us. For over a month now, these parts of lower Assam have been tense, angry and scared. But on National Highway 31, connecting Assam to North Bengal and the rest of India, there were no visible signs of hostility.

In Assam, over two lakh people are still refugees

It has been more than a month since ethnic violence broke out in parts of lower Assam. Ever since then people there have been tense, angry and scared. Nearly two and a half lakh people, both Bodos and minorities, are still in 224 relief camps, although two lakh people have returned to their homes.
