Kerala Chief Minister faces 'solar heat': Opposition demands his resignation
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's troubles refuse to go away with the opposition stepping up demands for his resignation over what has come to be known as the "solar scam".

Hundreds of opposition-backed protesters today tried to storm the state assembly, which adjourned indefinitely after repeated disruptions by the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front opposition.

Activists from pro-Left youth groups also clashed with the police during protests outside the university campus.

But Mr Chandy refused to quit and said in the assembly: "We will not bend before a political conspiracy"

The opposition wants the chief minister to resign over his alleged links with Sarita Nair and Biju Radhakrishnan, who are accused of cheating people by promising solar panels at low costs. The 2 accused, along with Shalu Menon, a dancer, allegedly used the chief minister's name to dupe people.

The opposition is also demanding a judicial probe after a businessman, Sreedharan Nair, claimed he had met Mr Chandy at his office along with Sarita Nair.

The Congress party is standing by Mr Chandy for now. Party leader AK Antony ruled out any change of government.

Leaked phone call records of Ms Nair showed frequent calls between her and several leaders from the Congress-led ruling coalition, including state Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan.

There has been speculation that the confidential call records were leaked because of infighting within the Congress.

The opposition alleges that Mr Chandy's office had been in close contact with the accused. The opposition has also alleged that the Chief Minister's Office tried to help the accused bag government contracts, a charge Mr Chandy has denied.

Three government officials were recently suspended for posting objectionable comments against the Chief Minister on a social networking site, and linking him to Ms Nair.
