Sri Lankan Courts Extend Remand Of 49 Tamil Nadu Fishermen

Two courts in Sri Lanka today extended till August 3 the remand of 49 Tamil Nadu fishermen.

Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu: Two courts in Sri Lanka today extended till August 3 the remand of 49 Tamil Nadu fishermen, arrested by the Lankan navy for allegedly fishing in their territorial waters.

Rameswaram Fishermen's Association President P Sesuraja said the 49 fishermen were among the 77 fishers arrested in June and July by the island nation's authorities for allegedly fishing in their territorial waters.

A court in Mannar, Sri Lanka, extended the judicial custody of 28 fishermen from Rameswaram till August 3, he said.

21 fishers from both Rameswaram and Pudukottai were produced before Oorkavalthurai court, which also extended their remand till August 3, he added.

Mr Sesuraja further said the fishermen would stage agitations on July 26 and 28 in Rameswaram to draw the attention of central and state governments to their demands which include release of fishermen and boats in Sri Lankan custody.
