Nalini Sriharan, Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Convict, Gets Parole For A Day

Nalini Sriharan, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, leaves Vellore jail to attend her father's last rites.

Chennai: Nalini Sriharan, convicted for life in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has been granted one-day parole to participate in the final rites of her father today.

"Jail authorities have allowed her to be on parole between 8 am and 8 pm," said her lawyer Puhalenthi.

She left the Vellore Central Prison (women's jail) under police escort at 6.50 AM today.

Nalini's father, a retired police inspector, died in Tirunelvelli. His final rites would take place in Chennai.

Nalini and three others, including her husband Murugan, were originally given death sentence after they were convicted for their role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. They have been behind bars for the last 25 years.

Nalini's death sentence was commuted to life in 2000. The death sentence of the other three was also commuted by the Supreme Court a few years ago citing inordinate delay in disposing their mercy pleas.
