The police are questioning a 38-year-old man for allegedly keeping his wife's decomposing body in his house for three days after she committed suicide following a tiff between them at Madhavaram.
Police were tipped off by neighbours who experienced foul smell emanating from the house.
They identified the man as Parthasarathy, a resident of Munnusamy Nagar, Ponniammanmedu in Madhavaram.
Police said they rushed to his house on Thursday when the man was watching TV with his children Lokeshwari (8) and Satish (6). When inquired, he reportedly told them that his wife Saraswathi (28), a native of Kancheepuram, had died and that he and his children were living with her body for three days as he feared police inquiry.
"He showed no emotion on his wife's death which made us suspicious," a police officer said. He was taken to the police station while his wife's partially decomposed body was sent for autopsy. Police sources said initial postmortem reports confirmed that she had killed herself.
Parthasarathy, working in a printing firm on Waltax Road, would regularly come home drunk and had fights with his wife, police said.
Upon questioning, he said his wife committed suicide.
