Jayalalithaa Said To Be Stable, Team Of AIIMS Doctors Assisting With Treatment

Jayalalithaa was admitted to hospital with fever and dehydration

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who has been in hospital for two weeks, is said to be stable and recovering, sources have told NDTV. A team of three AIIMS doctors - including heart and lung specialists - is in Chennai to assist with the treatment, the sources said. A specialist from London has also been reportedly called in.

Ms Jayalalithaa, 68, was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai on September 22 with fever and dehydration.

Yesterday, the hospital had said Ms Jayalalithaa's health "continues to improve" and the same line of treatment, including antibiotics and other clinical measures, were being continued.

The Tamil Nadu government has been under increasing pressure to share regular information on the Chief Minister's health. Yesterday, the government was told by the Madras High Court that regular updates "will reduce the anxiety of people".

In absence of regular health bulletins from the hospital, speculations had started about her health and social activist Traffic Ramaswamy had asked for a statement on her health and the appointment of an interim chief minister.

Opposition leaders like the DMK's M Karunanidhi have urged the Chief Minister's party to release a photograph to prove she is not critical. The ruling AIADMK had vehemently denied the reports and rejected the demand for photographs.

It had also filed police complaints against four persons for "spreading rumours" on social media.

On Friday, Governor C Vidyasagar Rao visited the hospital but did not meet her. A statement from his office said: "The Governor was happy to note that the chief minister is recovering well and appreciated the doctors for providing the best medical care and treatment."
