More trouble for Lalit Modi, passport could be cancelled
New Delhi: It's likely to become significantly tougher for Lalit Modi to stay away from India, where he faces an array of charges of financial misdeeds during his term as Commissioner of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Foreign Ministry has  been asked to cancel Modi's passport by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Modi has  ignored summons by the ED for questioning. Sources in the ED say they have been unable to contact Modi.

Modi's lawyer, Mehmood Abidi, described the new development as a "very drastic step that affects personal liberty."

Last week, the ED issued a Blue Alert against Modi - executed by Inrerpol, this is a notice that asks international law agencies to provide information about the person in question. And yesterday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the parent body of the IPL which was created by Modi, filed a criminal case against Modi in Chennai. That's in connection with a controversial broadcast rights deal which was engineered by Modi, and involved an alleged kickback of Rs 450 crore.

Modi also stands accused of violating income tax and foreign exchange laws, and of proxy holdings in at least two teams that were part of the IPL.
