FA Cup: Leeds stun Manchester United

Manchester: Jermaine Beckford was the hero as Leeds United beat Manchester United one-nil at Old Trafford on Sunday, to knock the 11-time F.A. Cup winners out of this season's competition.

Beckford scored Leeds' winner in the 19th minute and the League One side battled their way to a famous victory over their arch-rivals, who went out in the third round of the competition for the first time under manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Jonny Howson's long ball was touched on by Jermaine Beckford, who clinically slotted his 20th goal of the season past United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

Wayne Rooney went close for the home side five minutes later, but Leeds defender Jason Crowe turned his goal-bound shot wide.

Danny Welbeck then had a chance to score after being played through by Dimitar Berbatov in the 50th minute, but Leeds' keeper Casper Ankergren made a crucial block. Beckford then could have increased the visitors' lead in the 78th, only to drag his shot wide.

Leeds substitute Robert Snodgrass then tried his luck from a free-kick, but the woodwork came to the home side's rescue.

United side still had time to grab an equaliser and Rooney went close in the fourth minute of injury-time. However, the England striker's volley from Antonio Valencia's pass was blocked by Ankergren and Leeds eventually cleared the danger.

That would be the last chance for Sir Alex Ferguson's side, who hadn't been knocked out of at this early stage of the F.A. Cup since the Scotsman took charge in 1986.
