Karnataka is now trying legislation to make Kannada a compulsory language in schools affiliated to the state board. The bill to bring this into effect - the Kannada Language Learning Bill -- was passed in the Karnataka assembly today.

The 224 legislators of Karnataka have just given themselves a hefty, over 50% hike. The combined annual cost to the exchequer will be Rs 37 crore - up from Rs 24 crore.

A state legislator in Karnataka is now being investigated for allegedly threatening a junior of senior bureaucrat DK Ravi, whose death is being investigated by the country's premier investigating agency, the CBI.
