Wage panel recommends pay hike for nurses

Thiruvananthpuram: A committee set up by the Kerala Government to study the wage and service conditions of nurses in private hospitals has recommended a comprehensive hike in their pay scales.

The committee, headed by the former member of State Human Rights Commission Proffesor S Balaraman, submitted its report to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Tuesday.

According to sources, the report recommended increase in pay scales based on different categories of the hospitals they are working.

The report also wanted the "bond system" in hospitals to be strictly banned and duty hours of nurses fixed as eight hours.

Nurses in many private hospitals in the state have been on a warpath demanding pay increase and better working conditions.
