Puducherry: President Pranab Mukherjee will participate in the golden jubilee celebrations of centrally sponsored premier health institute JIPMER tomorrow.

The President will deliver the Golden Jubilee Address at the auditorium of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) at 3 pm, institute Director Dr T S Ravikumar told reporters today.

He will receive the Golden Jubilee souvenir to be released by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.

This is the second visit of Mr Mukherjee as President to the Union Territory after his participation in the convocation of the Pondicherry Central University last year.

JIPMER became an autonomous institution in 2007 through an Act of Parliament. It is an Institution of National Importance under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Mr Ravikumar said JIPMER had taken up expansion of various wings in its hospital including the super specialty block at a cost of Rs 40 crores and these would be completed in the next two years. A multi-organ transplant wing will also come up soon.

The International School of Public Health being established at a cost of Rs 150 crores by JIPMER would create six satellite centres and strengthen the health care services, he added.
