Chennai:
The number of polling stations in Tamil Nadu will go up by over 4,000 following the Election Commission's 'rationalisation' initiatives, state Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar said on Friday.
This was mainly done considering the law and order situation and crowd control during polling, he told reporters in Chennai.
"Polling stations with voter strength of 1,400 and 1,200 in urban and rural areas, respectively, have been divided further into new polling stations as part of the rationalisation," he said adding this would add a further 4494 booths in the state.
Subsequently, the number of booths would go up to 58,846, he said.
Releasing the schedule for special summary revision of electoral rolls for 2013, he said the draft publication of rolls will be done on October 1, 2012 and filing of claims and
objections could be done from that day till October 31, 2012.
Special campaign will also be held on October 7, 14 and 21, he said adding final rolls will be published on January 5, 2013.
According to the last revision in February 2012, there were 5.43 crore voters and an additional 1.74 lakh have been added so far, he said.
The elector to population ratio was 68.83 percent he added.
