Police arrest 30 law students from Madurai government college

Madurai: Police entered the Government Law College premises in Madurai and arrested 30 students who were on a sit-in for the past 11 days protesting, among other things, against the opening of private law colleges, police sources said.

The students locked the gate on July 23 and were on sit-in strike since then. They also allegedly illegally detained teachers and lecturers and conducted demonstrations on several days, police said.

Though the college had been closed indefinitely, the students did not vacate the premises.

Despite several rounds of talks in which Bar association members, police and revenue officials participated, the students did not come out of the college.

Police entered the complex yesterday morning, with the help of fire service personnel who put up ladders to facilitate the police entry into the premises as the entry points had been locked, and arrested the students, police said.
