Kerala administration at standstill due to internal squabbles: CPI

Thiruvananthapuram: The Communist Party of India (CPI)  today alleged that the administration in Kerala under the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government has come to a standstill due to squabbles among Front partners.

"Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has time only to hold talks with Front partners to resolve issues like Indian Union Muslim League's (IUML) demand for a fifth cabinet berth. Basic issues facing the people have been neglected", CPI State Secretary Pannian Raveendran told a meet the press programme today.

He said internal wrangling in the UDF would only intensify and the Front would not remain in the present form for long.

"The partners are pressurising Congress as they realise the party has become weak at the national and state level," he said.

On the coming by-poll at Neyyatinkara, necessitated due to the resignation of CPI (M) MLA R Selvaraj from the assembly, he said that Selvaraj's action was "immoral" and the public would teach him a lesson if he canvasses for votes as a UDF candidate.

Selvaraj had resigned from the House on March 9, saying he was a victim of "factionalism" in the party. He had claimed he was forced to take the decision after realising that he would not get "any justice or protection" from the party leadership.

To a question of exclusion of VS Achuthanandan from the CPI(M) politburo, he said that the veteran Communist leader is a man who has found a place in the heart of the people and there was no need to trigger a row over the post he holds.
