Atleast 533 cops in Kerala have criminal cases against them

Kochi: An RTI filed by Advocate DB Binu has revealed that at least 533 officials in Kerala Police have criminal cases lodged against them. The officials ranging from the civil police officer to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) are in the list.

The details of the police officers involved in criminal cases were submitted by DGP Jacob Punnoose in a sealed cover to the High Court on August 8, 2011. The contents were not disclosed so far.

Mr Binu had also sought details of the list of the criminal police officers submitted by the former Assistant Director General of Police (ADGP) Sibi Mathews to the government. But his plea was declined.

Cases against the police officers range from Murder to Rape. The officials, including women police personnel, have 29 vigilances against them, 36 CBI cases, and 7 cases relating to excise and forest department.

Among the who's who in the list are IGP Tomin J Thachankery, who was suspended from service after he undertook a foreign trip to the Gulf without seeking permission of the previous Left Democratic Front government, Assistant Commissioner, K Radhakrishnan, who fired in the air to quell a mob of activists in Kozhikode last year and three Assistant Commissioners - D Madhu, E K Sabu and T K Haridas.

A maximum of 118 cases against police officials have been registered in Thiruvananthapuram followed by 62 cases in Ernakulam district. However a minimum of 12 cases were registered in Wyanad.

The DGP had filed the details in the High Court on a direction from the division bench comprising Justice Thothathil B Radhakrishnan and Justice C T Ravikumar.

This is the first time when such a list has been prepared by the police department.
