Andhra Pradesh on alert after 20 rain-related deaths this week

Hyderabad: Low pressure over the Bay of Bengal has resulted in incessant showers in several areas of Andhra Pradesh, with more than 20 rain-related deaths reported so far.

While Kalingapatnam district in coastal Andhra Pradesh recorded 32.4 cm of rainfall on a single day, neighbouring Guntur and Prakasam districts received over 30 cm of rain.

Several low-lying areas in the state capital Hyderabad are also flooded, with the city's iconic Husainsagar Lake reaching the full-tank level.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea by the weather officials. Over 6000 people have been moved from low-lying areas to higher grounds for safety.

Agriculture has taken a huge hit with crops in over 2.5 lakh hectares damaged.

Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has spoken to district officials and asked them to give top priority to rescue operations and essential supplies to the people.

The National Disaster Response Force or NDRF, which played a crucial role in the aftermath of the recent Cyclone Phailin pouding the eastern shores, rescued a group of passengers stranded atop a bus in Prakasam district.
