Death Toll in Malin Landslide Disaster Reaches 87, 160 More Feared Trapped

Rescue workers on the landslide site in Malin village in Pune where still more than 160 people are feared to be trapped.

Pune: The toll in the Malin village landslide has climbed to 87 as authorities recovered five more bodies today. The rescue operations are underway, however, about 160 people are still feared to be trapped under the debris.

According to the District Control Room, among the dead were 33 men, 42 women and 12 children,

"Unfavourable weather conditions impeded the movement of heavy machinery pressed into service during the rescue operations, while the National Disaster Response Force personnel raced against time to clear the massive debris on the fifth day after the tragedy struck on July 30", it said.

State Home Minister R R Patil had visited the site last evening and assured the affected families that they will be provided with rehabilitation.

The government has announced an assistance of Rs five lakh each for the families of the deceased.
