A raft of teenage women have made their mark at the Australian Open, unlike the men, and senior players are sitting up and taking notice of the emerging talent.

David Ferrer will face Nicolas Almagro in an all-Spanish quarter-final at the Australian Open after they took contrasting roads to the last eight on Sunday.
Ferrer, the fourth seed in celebrated countryman Rafael Nadal's absence, wore down Japan's Kei Nishikori in straight sets to reach his third straight quarter-final at the year-opening Grand Slam.

Spain's 10th seed Nicolas Almagro reached his first Australian Open quarter-final after his Serbian opponent Janko Tipsarevic withdrew with a foot injury on Sunday.

Almagro was leading 6-2, 5-1 when Tipsarevic retired to hand the Spaniard a quarter-final match-up against countryman David Ferrer.

Flawless Maria Sharapova set a new Australian Open record on Sunday in losing just five games en route to the quarter-finals, where she was joined by fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova.
The second seed has been in impeccable form and she thrashed unseeded Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 6-1, 6-0 to set up a meeting with 19th seed Makarova, who knocked out world number five German Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-4

Federer offered some pointed advice when he said the big-talking Tomic should always show respect for his fellow players. "I think it's important to be confident but obviously you need to respect the game and the other players," Federer said.

Tomic had raised eyebrows by casting doubt on whether Federer would reach the third round at the Australian Open, and then by provocatively claiming that Saturday was "the perfect time" to beat him.

Chinese star Li Na advanced to the Australian Open last eight on Sunday, beating Julia Goerges in her quest to make a second final at Melbourne Park in three years.

Powerful Czech Tomas Berdych moved into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Sunday with a straight-sets victory over South African Kevin Anderson. The world number six defeated Anderson 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (15/13) in 2hr 44min.

Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska powered into the Australian Open quarter-finals on Sunday with a straight-sets win over former world number one Ana Ivanovic.
The Pole won her 13th match in a row in beating the Serbian 13th seed 6-2, 6-4 and will face Chinese sixth seed Li Na for a place in the semi-finals.
