10 sportspersons who rocked Google in 2012

With the biggest of the events happening all over the globe, it was a brilliant year for sports. Here's the Top 10 athletes who were the most sought after names on Google in the year 2012.

  • Jeremy Lin

The 24-year-old Houston Rockets player topped that chart on Google searches in 2012. One of the most sought after basketball players in the NBA, it was reported that New York Knicks may be willing to shell out even a billion dollars to have him on board.
  • Michael Phelps

With 22 medals, he is the biggest Olympic legend of all time now. After his 8-gold haul in 2008 Beijing, the American swimmer took home four gold and two silver medals from the London Olympics this year. With 18, he is the all-time record holder for Olympic gold medals.
  • Peyton Manning

The American football quarterback for the Denver Broncos is a record four-time winner of NFL's most valuable player awards. He was also the most valuable player of Super Bowl XLI, has been named to eleven Pro Bowls and has eleven 4,000-yard passing seasons. He returned to the NFL after undergoing a surgery last year. He joined Denver in March this year.
  • McKayla Maroney

A member of the US Artistic Gymnastics team, that won the gold at the Olympics this year, the 17-year-old is quite famous for her signature 'not interested' look. So much so, she even made President Barack Obama do that with her!
  • Junior Seau

A 10-time All-pro, this sporting icon was named in the NFL's All Decade Team in 1990s. He was also inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame while his team San Diego retired his jersey number 55. At the age of 43 this year, Seau killed himself with a gun shot.
  • Sarah Burke

The Canadian freestyle skier was a legend with four Winter X Games golds and world championship title. It was her effort that saw the superpipe event being added to the 2014 Winter Olympics, where Burke was a favourite to win the gold. She was seriously injured while training at Park City in Utah on January 10. She succumbed to the injuries on January 19.
  • Tom Daley

The 18-year-old British diver won the bronze in the 10m Individual Platform event in London. In the 2008 Olympics, Thomas was the youngest British contestant in Beijing. He also has two golds from the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
  • Lance Armstrong

All these years, he needed little introduction as the astounding number of seven consecutive Tour de France titles spoke for themselves. But 2012 was the darkest year of his life after being accused and proved of a "serial cheat who led the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen" by the USADA. On October 22, Union Cycliste Internationale, after endorsing USADA's verdict, banned him for life and stripped Armstrong of all the titles.
  • Mario Balotelli

He burns fire crackers in the hotel room, single handedly steers Manchester City to victories and has no qualms in bragging 'why always me' -- you can love or hate this Italian striker, but you can't miss him. It's only hard to decided for what exactly at that moment was he being searched for on Google!
  • Ryan Lochte

An 11-time Olympic medal winner, Lochte opened his account in London with a gold in the 400-meter individual medley. He went on to add one more gold, two silvers and a bronze in his tally from the 2012 Olympics.
