The 24-year-old Houston Rockets player topped that chart on Google searches in 2012. One of the most sought after basketball players in the NBA, it was reported that New York Knicks may be willing to shell out even a billion dollars to have him on board. -
Michael Phelps
With 22 medals, he is the biggest Olympic legend of all time now. After his 8-gold haul in 2008 Beijing, the American swimmer took home four gold and two silver medals from the London Olympics this year. With 18, he is the all-time record holder for Olympic gold medals. -
Peyton Manning
The American football quarterback for the Denver Broncos is a record four-time winner of NFL's most valuable player awards. He was also the most valuable player of Super Bowl XLI, has been named to eleven Pro Bowls and has eleven 4,000-yard passing seasons. He returned to the NFL after undergoing a surgery last year. He joined Denver in March this year. -
Junior Seau
A 10-time All-pro, this sporting icon was named in the NFL's All Decade Team in 1990s. He was also inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame while his team San Diego retired his jersey number 55. At the age of 43 this year, Seau killed himself with a gun shot. -
Sarah Burke
The Canadian freestyle skier was a legend with four Winter X Games golds and world championship title. It was her effort that saw the superpipe event being added to the 2014 Winter Olympics, where Burke was a favourite to win the gold. She was seriously injured while training at Park City in Utah on January 10. She succumbed to the injuries on January 19. -
Lance Armstrong
All these years, he needed little introduction as the astounding number of seven consecutive Tour de France titles spoke for themselves. But 2012 was the darkest year of his life after being accused and proved of a "serial cheat who led the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen" by the USADA. On October 22, Union Cycliste Internationale, after endorsing USADA's verdict, banned him for life and stripped Armstrong of all the titles. -
