VIPs line up to visit Basu

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee have reached Kolkata to see Jyoti Basu.

Veteran Marxist leader is a bit better on Thursday morning. He had to be put on a ventilator to relieve him of respiratory distress caused by pneumonia.

Former West Bengal chief minister, Jyoti Basu, who was down with fever and chest congestion, was brought to the AMRI hospital at Salt Lake in Kolkata, with oxygen support on January 1.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh flew down to Kolkata to see Jyoti Basu. He was received by CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.

Politburo member Sitaram Yechury also visited Basu at the AMRI hospital.

"We know that Jyoti Basu is responding to antibiotic treatment; he is showing signs of improvement. Mr Basu is one of the tallest political leader of our times and has served the country with distinction," he said.

Among the visitors was Mamata Banerjee - the Union Railway Minister and Left's main rival in the state.

"They have given him some different antibiotics. They are trying. But Basu is on a ventilator," she said.

Party politburo member Brinda Karat, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP, left for Kolkata to meet Basu. Prakash Karat is also expected to be in Kolkata on Thursday to see him. (NDTV Photo)

Basu's vital signs remained more or less the same as on Thursday morning and doctors of the medical board are constantly monitoring his condition.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has also visited Jyoti Basu at the AMRI Hospital in Kolkata and inquired about his condition.

“We wish speedy recovery for a great son of Bengal – Jyoti Babu. May he recover fast. All our thoughts are with him plus family,” he wrote in the visitors book.
