Voting is underway in Myanmar in historic polls for 45 vacant seats in the 664-seat parliament. The by-elections are being seen as a crucial test for the country's move towards democracy from almost five decades of military rule. Pro-Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi is contesting the elections for the first time.

Aung San Suu Kyi has extensively campaigned for this election. On the night before the polls Suu Kyi even slept overnight in the tiny village of 3,000 farmers.
