Safe sex practices
The best way to avoid the risks of getting sexually transmitted diseases and infections is to abstain from sex. However, it is a difficult practice so there are other tips which can help a couple lead a healthy sex life.
-
Before having sex, establish a committed relationship that allows trust and open communication. You should be able to discuss past sexual histories, any previous sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or intravenous drug users (IV) drug use. You should not feel coerced or forced into having sex.
-
If you don't want to get pregnant, ask you partner to either use condoms or you can go for birth contraceptive pills after consulting a gynaecologist. There are other forms of temporary and permanent contraception also available in the market like copper-T, cervical caps etc.

Anyone diagnosed as having an STI should be treated to reduce the risk of transmitting an STI, especially a pregnant woman to an infant. Follow the full course of medicine. Avoid sexual activity while being treated for an STI. Ensure that the partner is also diagnosed and treated.
