Segway: The New Way To Get Around

Introduced in 2001, the Segway PT is a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicle. Computers and motors in the base of the device keep the Segway PT upright when powered on. When the device is turned off, it cannot balance on its own and needs to be appropriately parked or leaned against a wall. A user can control the Segway to go forward by shifting his/her weight forward on the platform, and backward by shifting weight backward. Gyroscopic sensors and fluid-based leveling sensors are used to detect the shifting weight and hence the Segway moves in the desired direction. To turn the device left/right, the user manipulates the handlebar left or right.

Segway PTs are driven by electric motors and can reach a maximum speed of up to 12.5 miles per hour (20.1 km/h).

The i2 model of the Segway provides an easy and comfortable ride. Preferred locations for use are malls, corporate office/compounds, etc. Anywhere where the terrain is smooth. It will give you a maximum speed of 20kmph and will last up to 38km on a full charge.

The x2 on the other hand is the all-terrain model and can be used on rougher ground as well. Ideal for the golf course and rough terrain parks and will last up to 38km on a full charge. Both the models cost between Rs. 450,000 and Rs. 500,000.

There is an information key in the center of the handle bar. It provides you with vital information such as distance covered, speed, battery left and more. It also serves as a locking mechanism as the Segway will not work without this key.

Light sensors on the floor of the device indicate the current state of the Segway. Green signifies that the device is ready to use. Red signifies that the device has been turned off.

Phosphate-based lithium-ion batteries chargeable from households power the device. It balances with the help of dual computers running proprietary software, two tilt sensors, and five gyroscopic sensors.

If you like, you can attach a pouch or a carrying case to the Segway. Although it won't carry a lot of weight, a few books and a netbook would do just fine.
