Sonam Kapoor turns 27 today and just two days ago she demanded a special birthday gift from her friends, family and fans.
The actress
actively supports a campaign against breast cancer and asked people to spread awareness about the campaign as her birthday gift.
Sonam, who lost her aunt
to breast cancer, is the brand ambassador for the breast cancer campaign run by leading fashion magazine, Elle. She is trying to help generate funds by promoting the cause
on Twitter.
Better known for the clothes she wears than the roles she plays, Sonam made her second successful trip to the Cannes Film Festival this year as the brand ambassador of L'Oreal. And she didn't disappoint us this time either.
First, she wowed in a Gucci dress at the Gucci party.
Next, she showed off her fashion chops in a monochrome print gown by designer Naeem Khan at the L'Oréal/Chopard party.
Then came a casual yet stylish look in a Marni skirt and top, styled by her sister Rhea, for a photocall.
Ahe she pulled out all fashion stops with her only red carpet dress at the closing ceremony - a black Alexander McQueen tulle gown with a loose updo and fire engine red lips.
Sonam Kapoor is refreshingly undiplomatic, bordering on outrageous, in the notoriously politically correct world of Bollywood. After having famously called writer Shobhaa De a "fossil who's getting no action and
going through menopause" on Twitter, she recently called Katrina Kaif "shameless."
In an interview with film journalist Anupama Chopra in Cannes, Sonam said she'd
like to "give Katrina a bouquet." When asked why, she said: "I don't know how she does it. You need a certain kind of commitment and a certain kind of shamelessness to
do certain things."
But she was quick to retort and said that her quotes were totally misinterpreted by the media.
The pretty actress is currently busy with two projects - one opposite Kolaveri star Dhanush titled Ranjhana
where she plays a girl from small town Varanasi
Next is Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Bhaag Milkha Bhaag opposite Farhan Akhtar. She had last worked
with Omprakash in Delhi 6.
Her last release was multi-starrer Players directed Abbas Mustan , opposite Abhishek Bachchan. The film was the Hindi remake of The Italian Job and it
Made news more for Sonam's middle finger act than the actual content.
During one of the press conferences to promote the film, Sonam, who said that the
Censor Board was out of sync with today's youth for objecting to her showing her middle finger, flipped the bird once again.
Her last hit film was two years ago, I Hate Luv Storys opposite Imran Khan.
She was seen in her home production Aisha (2010) which was a film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. Next came a comedy Thank You in
2011, which also failed to make a mark at the box office.
She was also seen romancing Shahid Kapoor in Mausa, which was the directorial debut of noted actor Pankaj Kapur.
Recently, her cousin brother Arjun Kapoor, who is the eldest son of her uncle Boney Kapoor and his late wife Mona, made a spectacular Bollywood debut with
Ishaqzaade.
Coming Up: A look at her personal life and filmy journey so far...
Sonam is the eldest daughter of Anil Kapoor and Sunita. She is the granddaughter of filmmaker Surinder Kapoor.
She has two uncles - Boney Kapoor
is a famous producer while Sanjay Kapoor was an actor. Boney is now married to famous actress Sridevi.
Sonam has one sister, Rhea, and a brother, Harshvardhan. Rhea made her Bollywood debut as a producer with Aisha and she also styles Sonam at times.
Sonam went to Arya Vidya Mandir school in Juhu and then went to the United World College of South East Asia for her International Baccalaureate.
Then she studied Political Science and Economics from University of East London.
Before making her BIG Bollywood debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya opposite Ranbir Kapoor in 2007, she worked as an assistant director for the
filmmaker in Black (2005).
Sonam and Ranbir put in fair performances but the film proved to be a major disaster at the box office, except it's hit soundtrack.
The actress, whose style is the talk of B-Town and is looked up to by many young girls today, weighed 86 kilos before becoming an actress and she lost over 30 kilos after Bhansali singed her for Saawariya.
Then came Rameysh Om Prakash Mehra's Delhi 6, which gave her the famous nickname 'Masakali girl' of Bollywood. The film was another dud in her short career.
She was linked with her Saawariya co-star Ranbir Kapoor but no relationship was ever formally confirmed.
There were also rumours that she was seeing her Delhi 6 co-star VJ Cyrus Sahukar.
Her last rumoured boyfriend was her I Hate Luv Storys director Punit Malhotra but the actress has been typically tightlipped so far.
She created news when she was signed as the new Indian brand ambassador of international brand L'Oreal. Rumours that L'Oreal's 37 year old ambassador Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was considered too old to appeal to the younger generation were fuelled in no small measure by outspoken Sonam herself, who made a dig at people who were on the worng side of 30. A reported cold war between the two actresses followed and Ash allegedly refused to walk the Cannes red carpet in 2010 with Sonam.
We hope to see Sonam more on the big screen and not for her controversial remarks. Here's wishing the fashionista a very happy birthday.
