Born and brought up in Mumbai, Jyothika majored in Psychology from Mithibai College.
She married her co-star in several movies, Suriya Sivakumar, on September 11, 2006.
The couple has a daughter, Diya and son Dev.
Jyothika's debut Tamil movie Vaali (1999), with Ajith Kumar and Simran in the lead, was a blockbuster. She won the Filmfare Best Debutant (Tamil) award for her part in the film.
Jyothika met Suriya for the first time on the sets of her second movie, Poovellam Kettuppar (1999).
Her next hit came with the Tamil movie Kushi in 2000. Jyothika was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress (Tamil) award for her role in Kushi.
Jyothika's first movie with Kamal Haasan was Thenali (2000). The movie had music by AR Rahman and was directed by KS Ravikumar.
In 2001, Jyothika starred opposite Hollywood actor Bentley Mitchum in Singeetham Srinivasa Rao's fantasy film,Little John.
Jyothika won the Cinema Express Award for Best Actress (Tamil) for the movie Poovellam Un Vasam, which starred Ajith as the main lead. The movie was a huge hit.
The pair of Jyothika and Ajith were back in Raja (2002), but the success story of Poovellam Un Vasam was sadly not repeated this time.
In 2003 came yet another blockbuster movie Dhool directed by Dharani. Along with Jyothika the lead cast also included Vikram and Reema Sen. It was remade in Telugu as Veede starring Ravi Teja and Aarti Agarwal.
In the same year, Jyothika did another movie with Suriya Kaakha Kaakha. Written and directed by Gautham Menon, this crime-thriller became a huge hit. Force starring John Abraham and Genelia D'Souza is the Hindi remake of this movie.
Jyothika won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress for the movie Perazhagan (2004), again co-starring Suriya. Both the lead actors played double roles in the movie.
She won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress again for Chandramukhi (2005).
Jyothika played a deaf and mute girl in Mozhi (2007), which also starred Prithviraj, Prakash Raj and Swarnamalya in pivotal roles. She won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress for the third time for this movie.
She was last seen in the Malayalam movie Seetha Kalyanam.
