A professor of a government medical college was arrested today on charges of sexual harassment and assault on a female student belonging to Scheduled Caste.
"The anaesthesia department professor was arrested under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act," said Inspector AK Swain of Mangalabag police station.
The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint filed by the female post graduate student of the Shri Ramachandra Bhanj Medical College.
She recorded her statement before a magistrate under Section 164 of Criminal Procedure Code and submitted an audio CD as proof of her charges, the officer said, adding there was prima facie evidence against the accused.
The wife of the professor, however, alleged her husband was being framed. "My husband is the victim of a conspiracy hatched by other faculty members of the department," she said.
