Cycling

Four different cycling competitions will take place in Beijing: road, track, mountain cycling, and, for the first time, BMX cycling. On the road, the cyclists, organised in national team formations, depart simultaneously on a designated circuit and make a number of laps totalling a distance of around 239 km (120 km for women).More complex and specialized than other cycling disciplines, track cycling consists of three different categories according to distance, short, medium and long, and focuses on speed and endurance.Quickly developed into an international sport from being a recreational activity, the mountain cycling competition will see cyclists compete on a hilly, rough terrain. Men race between 40 and 50 kms, and women cover 30 to 40km, depending on weather conditions.Bicycle moto cross (BMX) races are held on circuits of around 350 metres, including jumps, banked corners and other obstacles. Eight riders compete in each heat (qualifying rounds, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals), with the top four qualifying for the next round. More
