Facebook Apologises For Rejecting Ad Featuring Plus-Sized Model

  • Facebook rejected ad saying it violated its 'health and fitness policy'
  • Outrage on social media after Facebook's decision to remove ad
  • The ad was for a talk by an Australian community on 'Feminism and fat'

Facebook, which has been criticized in the past for some of its privacy policies and guidelines, has had to apologise for rejecting an advertisement featuring a plus-sized model.

Facebook recently refused to let an Australian community called Cherchez la Femme run an ad for a talk on the subject 'feminism and fat' - while the event itself was approved, the ad promoting it was not.

The visual in the ad features plus-sized model Tess Holliday in a bikini and was rejected by Facebook on the grounds that it contravened their "health and fitness policy." The ad has now been allowed to run.

Furious after receiving Facebook's response, Cherchez la Femme member Jess posted a note highlighting the incident. She wrote: "To my surprise, Facebook rejected my boosted ad request because it promoted an "idealised physical image." I appealed this decision through Facebook, thinking that someone must have gotten a little confused about what we were doing by using an image of the divine Tess Holliday for the event banner."

"Facebook has ignored the fact that our event is going to be discussing body positivity (which comes in all shapes and sizes, but in the particular case of our event, fat bodies), and has instead come to the conclusion that we've set out to make women feel bad about themselves by posting an image of a wonderful plus sized woman. We're raging pretty hard over here - both because Facebook seemingly has no idea that plus sized, self-describing fat women can feel great about themselves, and also because we haven't been able to boost the original damn post," said the note.
