Pakistan's Punjab government has challenged the release of India's most wanted terrorist Hafeez Saeed from house arrest.

The Punjab government had made public their intention to challenge the verdict ending Hafiz Saeed's house arrest orders on the same day (June 2). The ruling was made by the Lahore High Court.

India believes Hafeez Saeed is the mastermind of the 26/11 attacks.

Shortly after Lahore High Court had freed Saeed and a close aide on June 2, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and Pakistan's Attorney General Latif Khosa had said an appeal would be filed within "a matter of days".

Though the Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit had said that an appeal would be filed by the government of Punjab province, the federal government and the provincial government appeared to be waiting on who would take the initiative.

The federal government had been distancing itself from an earlier plan to file a joint appeal with the provincial government, sources had said.
