Madhesis demand greater political autonomy
Press Trust of India, Friday May 15, 2009, Kathmandu

A top leader of a Terai-based Madhesi party, which holds the key to the formation of a government in Nepal, on Friday stepped up pressure on political parties for greater political autonomy for the people living in the plains bordering India.

Nepal's Foreign Minister in the caretaker government, Upendra Yadav, who is also president of the Madhesi People's Rights Forum which is the fourth largest party with 53 seats in the 601-strong Constituent Assembly, said his party will only support a government if they expressed written commitment to implement the eight-point agreement reached between the Joint Madhesi Democratic Front and the government last year.

Nepal's Terai lowlands are home to about half of the country's 27 million people, and the residents of the region, known as Madhesis, have long complained of discrimination by the Himalayan nation's hill communities.

The pro-Terai parties argue that people in the Madhesi-dominated southern Terai region have long been treated as second-class citizens in Nepal, where hill-origin elites dominate politics, the security forces and business.

The eight-point agreement includes declaring the Terai plains an autonomous region and greater representation for the Madhesi community in the state structure, including the army and the police proportionate to their population.

Yes, this is true...people , living in tarai for years have been as second class citizens. All the time, when they demand their right, they called INDIANS. That is certain that look and culture are similar to indian. For the last 200-240 years BAHUN AND CHHETRI HAVE EVERYTHING........all opportunities...power........any one can find out looking inside police, army, diplomat es. At the present we, madeshi have been fighting for our right and identity. We need indian support. We do not want to i marge in India. We want a good relationship with India. This is the time to fight for madeshi's right.

It is not Nepali people living in Madesh demanding complete autonomy, or secession, from the mainland, but it is those dirty Indians who bought Nepali citizenship. they want to split up Nepal in the name of regional autonomy to serve their own vested interest in Nepal. For one who loves Nepal, the demand complete autonomy is unthinkable. Indian political predetor are fishing in Nepal by throubling the water and they are responsible for the development of chain-series of political gridlock in Nepal. Though political leaders like Sitaram Yechuri have played a selfless role in Nepali Politics, but other big, shark-size leaders want just the opposite. This is the ultimate reality of Nepal and Nepali politics than Madesh or Prachanda.
