China: We're not military threat

Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday dismissed concerns about the country's increasing military power, vowing to maintain a "defensive" national defence policy. Hu made the remarks during a meeting with the heads of air force delegations from 30 countries, in China to attend the 60th anniversary celebrations of China's air force. During the meeting Hu said that China's national defence policy would remain "defensive in nature".

Spicy Indian curries could prevent swine flu and common cold just like any prescribed medicine available with the chemists, Russian doctors have said. "You can strengthen immunity by consuming spicy foods like curries, as spices like turmeric, ginger and zeera also posses excellent therapeutic effect," an unnamed official of Moscow city sanitary and anti-epidemics committee was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti. As panic grips Muscovites over the spread of seasonal influenza and swine flue in the eastern parts of the country and neighbouring Ukraine, authorities are focusing on prevention and have ordered the use of masks at work place. Besides the intake of spicy food, people have been advised to consume raw onions and garlic, which also are said to contain good anti-viral properties.

US shootout: Fort Hood army base

Fort Hood is the largest military US base in the world. It is home to about 40,000 army personnel. Fort Hood is located near Killeen, Texas. At least 25,000 soldiers are at Fort Hood at any point, a Pentagon spokesman said. Built in 1942, Fort Hood also includes two museums and a lake.

Soon after the shootout, President Obama said a number of American soldiers have been killed in a 'horrific outburst of violence'. "My immediate thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and with the families of the fallen and with those who live and serve at Fort Hood. These are men and women who have risked their lives to protect ours. It's difficult enough when we lose these brave men in battles overseas. It's horrifying that they should come under fire in an army base on American soil," he said.

US Hedge fund scam: 14 more charged

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested 14 people for alleged involvement in what prosecutors say was the largest hedge-fund insider trading scheme ever on Wall Street, prosecutors in New York said on Thursday. Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara said 14 people, "including attorneys and Wall Street professionals" were arrested.

Shoe thrown at former Australian PM

An angry man threw a boot at former Australian prime minister John Howard during a debate at Britain's Cambridge University, the quick-thinking student who caught the shoe said on Thursday. Andrew Chapman, a senior officer at the Cambridge Union Society which organised the debate, told AFP how he stepped in to stop the boot thrown by an Australian man who had earlier branded Howard a "racist".

China reassures India over Brahmaputra dam

India express reservations on UN’s Gaza report

India has expressed its reservations from making any "unqualified endorsement" on the findings and recommendations of the Goldstone report at a special session of the UN General Assembly. "We have reservations in making unqualified endorsement of the various recommendations as well as some of the procedures adopted by the Goldstone report, including the involvement of the International Criminal Court and that of the Security Council," Member of Parliament (MP) B K Hariprasad said, speaking on behalf of the Indian delegation.
