Will India and Pakistan resume talks?
Barkha Dutt, Wednesday July 15, 2009, Sharm el-Shiekh, Egypt

Will Egypt possibly set the stage for a thaw between India and Pakistan? After a 90-minute meeting between the two foreign secretaries, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna says this time the acrimony from the Pakistan side has been less than before.

Amidst reports that the two prime ministers could make a joint media appearance on Thursday, Krishna said India might have to accept that the trial of Hafiz Saeed is an internal legal matter of Pakistan.

But some key differences remain unresolved. Sources say Pakistan is pushing for the composite dialogue process to be resumed whereas India is keener on a more specific terrorism-only agenda for now.

Another area of friction in the talks, sources say, has been the issue of the Samjhauta Express blast in which 60 Pakistani citizens were killed. Speaking to NDTV, Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir said it accepted that the Samjhauta case was being investigated by Indians' own legal system but indicated that India should do the same on Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed.

India has said Pakistan must arrest the Lashkar chief if it's a decent civilised society.

Saeed is accused of masterminding the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks last year.

The Punjab government in Pakistan on Tuesday informed the country's Supreme Court that it wanted to withdraw its petition challenging a lower court's order that released Saeed from detention, saying it did not have adequate evidence against him.

I do not understand why we have to succumb to Pakistan's pressure for the resumption of stalled dialogue, although they are still not serious of taking action on the points India has rightly demanded from Pakistan. Enough is enough, we should not be so guillibe.

Let Salman Bashir understand that we Indians are not interested in talking to Pakistan on any issues till all the perpetrators of 26/11 carnage is not arrested and tried. We also want the list of 22 Indian terrorist living in Pakistan to be handed over to India and a written statement that Pakistan hence forth will not be engaged in any proxy war with India through terrorism anywhere in India, and then only will India resume any kind of constructive dialogue with Pakistan. Samjhota Express carnage suspects are in custody and under trial in the court of law unlike Pakistani suspects in Pakistan. One question I would like to ask here is did USA get into any kind of CBM talks with Al Qaida after 9/11 attacks. Indians will not take it lying down anymore and 26/11 was the last straw on the camels back. Let Pakistan and the world know that India is a superpower today on its own and without friendship with Pakistan and we don't need them in future also.
