LTTE launches wave of suicide attacks

Waging a desperate battle for survival, the Tamil Tigers launched a wave of suicide attacks on land and sea, but failed to stall the advance of Sri Lankan forces, who broke through their defences as fierce fighting left 44 rebels dead and many soldiers wounded.

At least 257 bodies have been taken to hospital and over 800 wounded managed to reach a makeshift hospital. A report said that dead bodies are strewn in the area and alleged that every kind of lethal weapon, some of them internationally banned, was used on the civilians.

LTTE trying to enter India?

The LTTE, pushed to a narrow stretch in Sri Lanka by its army, is trying to infiltrate into India through the western coast, a senior Navy officer said on Saturday. "As the Navy is closely monitoring the Tamil Nadu coast, we realised that people from Sri Lanka, including LTTE cadres, were trying to illegally enter from the west coast," said Vice-Admiral S K Damle, flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Southern Naval Command.

New safety zone marked in Lanka

The Sri Lankan Army is now in full control of more than two thirds of Puthumattalan, where most of the civilians are concentrated. The army has officially redefined the new safety zone, restricting it to an area of some two km in length and 1.5 km in width. This modification matches the situation on the ground where apparently most of the civilians live.
