Security stepped up in Tamil Nadu

Chronology: Lanka-LTTE war

Ceylon changed its name to Sri Lanka and Buddhism was given primary place as country's religion in 1972, which further antagonised the ethnic Tamil minorities who already felt that they were being marginalised. This led to the formation of LTTE in 1976 by Velupillai Prabhakaran. Now in 2009, the LTTE has been defeated by the Sri Lankan army. Here is a chronology of the 25-year-old war.

Alert in TN after LTTE chief's death

Prabhakaran's body found

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam Velupillai Prabhakaran has been shot dead by the Lankan troops, the Sri Lankan army has said. The LTTE chief’s body has also been found by the Lankan army, which has identified the body. Following the reports of Prabhakaran’s death, the police bandobast has been stepped up in Chennai.

Prabhakaran's son dead

A body suspected to be that of Charles Anthony, son of LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran, has been found in the Lanka war zone, Sri Lankan army has said. Sri Lankan special forces have also recovered bodies of three top LTTE leaders - political head B Nadesan, LTTE peace secretariat chief Pulidevan and Ramesh, the army said.

3000 civilians flee LTTE zone

At least 3,000 civilians, held hostage by the LTTE inside the new safety zone along the Mullaithivu sea coast, escaped on Thursday as the Sri Lanka military opened up an escape route. The Lankan military believe that the exodus from the LTTE-held area is expected to pick up as the army is helping stranded Tamil civilians in the current phase of the operation.
