Lanka slams Jayalalithaa

Sri Lanka on Sunday took strong objection to AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa's remarks that Tamil Eelam was the only solution for the ethnic conflict, saying she should "find some other place to give Eelam" but not on the island. The AIADMK chief made the comments at a public meeting in Tamil Nadu on Saturday.

Lanka rejects Tiger truce

Citing the plight of refugees, and Indian and global pressure, the LTTE announced a unilateral ceasefire on Sunday. But it was promptly rejected by the Sri Lankan government. “Declaring ceasefire is a joke. The LTTE has no capability of mounting offensive,” said Sri Lanka Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona.

LTTE calls for ceasefire

As the Sri Lankan offensive on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) reaches its final stages, the Tamil Tigers have announced unilateral ceasefire. However, the Lankan government has been quick in rejecting the ceasefire call. The LTTE has said that it announced the ceasefire in the face of an "unprecedented humanitarian crisis".

LTTE chief's birth certificate recovered

Sri Lankan troops have recovered the birth certificate, horoscope and albums of LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran and his son Charles Antony here in northern war zone. During search operations, troops of the 53 division unearthed the birth certificate, horoscopes and albums of the LTTE leader and his family, Sri Lankan army officials said visiting foreign journalists, who immediately rushed to see and take pictures of the documents.

UN rushes envoy to Lanka

Hundreds of Tamil civilians fleeing the war zone walked listlessly as they arrived at this village, once a vital supply line of the Tamil Tigers, which now bears witness to the imminent defeat of the LTTE after a 25-year-old battle. Soon after their arrival, the civilians, who have crossed over with horrific tales of war and destruction, were moved to a temporary shelter.
