Lanka editor held over military rift story

A Sri Lankan editor was arrested for reporting on an alleged rift between a senior military commander and the government after the defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels, police and his newspaper said on Sunday. Chandana Sirimalwatte was held for questioning after police raided the offices of his "Lanka" newspaper, a spokesman for the paper said.

More Indian funds for Lankan Tamils

Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that India will, if required, allocate more funds to Sri Lanka for the rehabilitation of over 2.5 lakh Tamils displaced by the war against LTTE. Chidambaram made the announcement after a brief meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday. He said that the discussion centred on the visit of a delegation of MPs to Sri Lanka last week.

Lanka to resettle 58,000 Tamils in 15 days

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse has assured the Indian MPs' delegation that 58,000 of the 2.53 lakh internally displaced Tamils in Lanka would be sent home from camps by the end of October and the rest in a phased manner, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said on Wednesday.

Female suicide bomber on the run in Lanka

Sri Lanka has issued an alert for a 25-year-old suspected female suicide bomber, seen frequenting busy commercial area of Colombo to carry out a possible 'mission'. The Sri Lanka Terrorist Investigation Division has urgently sought public cooperation to provide any information to help arrest the female suicide bomber, Abdul Shalam Fatima Yasmin, an official statement said.

LTTE’s new chief arrested

The new chief of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Selvarasa Pathmanathan, has been arrested in Thailand and brought to Colombo for questioning. Highly placed sources say he was picked up and flown to the capital, but there are no details of the circumstances under which he was taken into custody.

The new leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which has been fighting for a separate Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka for the past three decades, also said some leaders in Tamil Nadu were "unwilling" to accept the truth that Prabhakaran is no more.
