Heat wave across cities claims 17 lives

Rising heat wave around India has started claiming lives with death toll in Orissa mounting to 15 on Sunday due to sunstroke. The temperature remained above 42 degree Celsius in many places despite substantial fall in mercury level here and adjoining areas.

Scorching heat troubles Orissa tribal

Orissa is in the grip of a heat wave. For the villagers in the state's tribal-dominated Keonjhar district, it is a trying summer. Their villages are dry and they have to walk miles in search of water. A search for water under the scorching sun is daily routine for women and children of Keonjhar's Santangiri village. Their village is dry and parched. Women and children dig a dry riverbed in search of water.

No respite from heat in north India

There was no respite from extreme heat wave conditions as mercury levels shot up in many parts of the country. Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh continued to boil under intense heat conditions on Thursday with the mercury remaining above 41 degrees Celsius in most pockets of the region.

Heat wave continues, death toll 24

The grinding heat wave continued unabated with many states recording maximum temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday even as nine persons perished in the torrid sun in West Bengal and Gujarat, taking the nationwide toll to 24. Six more persons died of heatstroke in West Bengal's Burdwan district, taking the statewide death toll to 11, officials said.

Delhi: Mercury rises to season's highest

The people of Delhi continued to feel the summer heat for another day on Saturday with the mercury settling at a maximum of 41 degree Celsius, the season's hottest day so far. The mercury went past the 40-degree mark for the first time on April 22 when the maximum touched 40.2 degree Celsius.

Poor in Orissa battle killer heat

Summer heat has killed over 2600 people in Orissa in the past 10 years. And this year, 25 people have already died of the heat stroke. But the official figure, however, is only four. Parts of the state are already recording temperatures above 40 degrees. And it's mostly the poor people who are more prone to the dangers of the scorching heat. But they have to keep working.

Punjab, Haryana soar in rising mercury

Temperatures soared across Punjab and Haryana on Tuesday with Hisar being the hottest with a maximum of 41.8 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal. Patiala in Punjab was the next hottest place in the region, recording a maximum of 40.6 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal, the Met office said in Chandigarh.

Heat wave grips Orissa, schools shut

It's barely the end of April and the heat is already unbearable in Orissa. All schools have been closed for the summer vacation, at least eight days in advance. At least 25 people died over the last three weeks due to heatstroke.
