Sarabjit: Fresh mercy plea to be filed

Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh's lawyer will file a fresh mercy petition before Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday in the wake of the Supreme Court dismissing his appeal against the capital punishment. Owais Sheikh, the new counsel for Sarabjit, said the petition seeking clemency for the Indian national will include a letter addressed to Zardari by the condemned man.

Sarabjit gets a new lawyer

Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who is languishing in a Pakistani jail for the last 18 years, has got a new lawyer, days after the supreme court in Islamabad dismissed his appeal against capital punishment. Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur on Saturday said she "no longer had faith" in Rana Abdul Hamid, who was representing him till now, questioning the lawyer's non-appearance during the two recent hearings of the review petition challenging the death sentence handed out to the Indian in 1991 for alleged involvement in four blasts in Pakistan.

Sarabjit case: Burney to file fresh plea

Human Rights Activist Ansar Burney will file a fresh mercy petition on Thursday to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on behalf of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian facing the gallows in that country. Singh's petition to review his death sentence was rejected by Pakistan's Supreme Court on Wednesday.

No mercy for Sarabjit

The balance between life and death once again swung for Sarbjit Singh, sentenced to death by a Pakistani court in 1990 on charges of being a terrorist. On Wednesday a Pakistani court again rejected his review petition. His lawyer didn't turn up, apparently because he hasn't been paid his fees. In India, Sarabjit's family was again left pleading for his life. Said his wife Sukhpreet Kaur: "I would like to request both the governments to please come to an agreement and release my husband who is innocent and has suffered a lot."

Sarabjit's mercy plea rejected

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a review petition filed by Indian national Sarabjit Singh and upheld the death sentence given to him for his alleged involvement in bomb attacks in 1990. A three-member bench led by Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed dismissed Sarabjit's review petition on merit and upheld the death sentence awarded to him by an anti-terrorism court in 1991.
