Aus contests report on Indians' death

The Australian government on Wednesday contested the claims that 54 foreign students, nearly half of them Indians, have died in that country in 2008 saying the reports "did not contain accurate statistics". A statement issued by the Australian High Commission in New Delhi said, "Articles on this issue in today's Australian newspapers did not contain accurate statistics."

Indian student arrested in Oz

A youth was arrested for "riotous behaviour" during a peace rally held by Indian students in Melbourne demanding justice for victims of growing racial attacks against them in Australia. Quoting local media and community sources, Saurabh Azad, a victim of the attacks, in Melbourne told NDTV.com that some people were detained after 5000 angry students took to the streets in Melbourne on Sunday.

Sikh student assaulted in Australia

In yet another racial attack on Indian students in Australia, a 22-year-old Sikh youth was assaulted by a group of six teenagers, who tried to remove his turban and cut the hair. Resham Singh, a student of hospitality course who came from Punjab six months ago, became the 20th victim within a month when he was attacked yesterday at Dandenong Station here.

FISA now says not all Aus attacks racist

SC on race attacks in Aus

The Supreme Court on Monday expressed concern over unabated attacks on Indian students in Australia and directed the government to file a comprehensive affidavit within two weeks about steps taken by it to ensure their safety. "The safety and security of Indian students in Australia is paramount," a bench comprising Justices Dalveer Bhandari and A K Ganguli said.

Another racial attack?

In a fresh case of assault in Australia, two men reported to be Indians, were allegedly attacked and struck with a beer bottle by two juveniles in Sydney on Sunday. The attack took place in Sydney's CBD early Sunday morning after the men got into an argument that escalated into a fight, New South Wales police said. The police have not revealed the identity or nationality of the victims.

Oz attacks 'racial outbursts' by anti-socials

Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi told reporters in Chennai that the attacks were actually "racial outbursts" by certain anti-social elements who robbed the students who were not staying in hostels or accommodations provided by the institutions. "They were attacked especially during late night while they were coming back from their work", he said. "There is no discrimination from the society. There are many nationalities in Australia."

Hindu priest's kin attacked in Ireland

Northern Ireland Police have beefed up security at the Indian Community Centre in North Belfast after family of a Hindu priest came under racial attack from a gang of youths. Though the family said they are frightened after the June 15 attack on them, they have decided to stay back at the centre following assurances from the police.
