Yamuna flows near danger level

For most of the year, the Yamuna is effectively a polluted drain that flows through Delhi. There is little water and mostly polluted discharge from factories and settlements. Now, the Yamuna is overflowing its banks because of the very heavy rains in the area over the last couple of days, and people living in low lying areas face an imminent danger.

Deep depression over Bay of Bengal

Rains continue to drench North India

Weather remained pleasant in most parts of North India as rains continued to drench the region, including the national capital, keeping mercury at comfortable levels. Heavy to moderate rain was recorded at many places in Uttar Pradesh, as a result of which there was decline in average temperature by four-five degrees, Met office said.

Palamu: 24 hours with a farmer

Enroute to the Parsalia village in the dense jungles of Palamu district of Jharkhand, NDTV team meets Shankar Yadav -- a 40 year old farmer -- taking his five buffaloes back to the village from the river. "My biggest worry is what to feed them. Fodder is fast running out. I tried to sell them, but no one is willing to buy the buffaloes," he says.

El Nino scare for drought-hit India

India staring at a drought, thanks to a delayed and weak monsoon. The crops hardest hit by drought are rice, sugar and soyabean. Trade sources said that India's sugar stocks on July 31 were 60 per cent lower than a year ago. It is a bigger year-on-year decline than the 54 per cent drop a month ago.

Desperate pleas of farmers pushed to the brink: Help us or allow us to kill ourselves. Six hundred farmers in the Chhatarpur block of the Palamu district of Jharkhand are taking this threat to the President through a petition. Palamu has a history of droughts. The area is fertile, but has no irrigation system. This year has been particularly bad. The entire state has been declared drought hit.

Drought: Govt says don't panic, but...

Because if you keep chanting drought drought, drought and its adverse impact, it will not give me any relief," said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday. The Finance Minister is worried.
