Iran: Partial recount of disputed poll

Iran's top election body on Monday began a partial recount of the fiercely disputed presidential election, after opposition demonstrators defiantly faced off against riot police in Tehran. The move came as Iran faced growing international pressure over its arrest of British embassy staff accused of fomenting unrest in the aftermath of the June 12 election that returned President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power.

Iran: Karroubi demands fresh poll probe

Defeated Iranian presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi on Sunday demanded an independent panel to probe irregularities in the disputed presidential election. "If an independent panel is set up by the Guardians Council with full responsibility to investigate all aspects of the election, I will welcome it and later nominate my representative," the reformist Karroubi wrote in a letter to the council which was published in his newspaper ‘Etemad Melli’.

No apology to Ahmadinejad: Obama

Toughening his stand on Iran, US President Barack Obama dismissed a demand for apology from his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, saying that the leader should think about his "obligations" towards his people. "I would suggest that Ahmadinejad think carefully about the obligations to his own people. And he might want to consider looking at the families of those who have been beaten or shot or detained," said Obama.

No fraud in vote: Iran poll watchdog

The spokesman of Iran's electoral watchdog, the Guardians Council, Abbasali Kadkhodai, on Friday said that there was no fraud in the June 12 presidential election that saw Mahmoud Ahmadinejad win a new four-year term. "After 10 days of examination, we did not see any major irregularities," Kadkhodai told the official IRNA news agency.

Hackers posted a caustic message telling US President Barack Obama to mind his own business and stop talking about the disputed Iranian election on a US university website’s homepage. Attempts to access the Oregon University System's website were automatically redirected to another page, where readers viewed a message said to be from Iran that asserted there was no cheating in the election.
