Women's Quota Bill: Will they or won't they?
Sunday, Jun 07, 2009
What's next on the cards? It's a new beginning with the assurance of keeping an old promise. After ensuring the first woman President and the first woman Lok Sabha Speaker, the UPA is determined to enact the Women's Reservation Bill.

The Bill has been a political sore point for over a decade now, often sparking heated debates in Parliament and beyond. While the proponents of the Bill have been trying to use it as a political stunt to woo women voters, its opponents have kept up their efforts to stunt its progress by describing it as elitist.

But the key question is: Will it find political support this time around? Can the government accomplish within a 100 days what's been stuck for the last 14 years? Does UPA have the numbers to pass the Women's Reservation Bill?

Let's trace the course the Bill has covered till date.

It is not suprising that Lalu feels the Women's reservation Bill, if passed, would benefit only the elite class. Afterall he (now a member of elite class) has enjoyed the luxury of having Rabari as CM even without the Bill being passed. Many like him would get a better chance of enjoying the powers of parliamentarians. Emancipation and empowerment of women lies in removing their illitracy and not is any kind of reservation.

The Bill is likely to be introduced to favour women belonging to political leader's relatives e.g. Daughters/daughter-in-laws of Sharad Pawar, Karunanidhi, Sangma, Badal, Sonia Gandhi, Jagjivan Ram etc. etc. The spirit of the bill should be for neglected sector of women and not elite women. This should not be an employment scheme for existing politician's relations as the people are fed up of the present politicians who are responsible for the evils in the system and in the society.

Give every thing to them only.... We men go to hell... Stupid people... when they claim that they are no less then MEN, then why the hell they need reservations, it shows they themself's are saying that they are weak

Reservation for women in parliament and Assemblies sounds utterly bizarre, only because it would never benefit the intended sections of women. This would only lead to making the highly sophisticated politics in India even more nastier. Passing of the bill would benefit the current politicians who would field their wives, daughters as candidates more than the intended recipients. There is no assurance that justice can be done to 33% reservation of seats to women, for they might not be filled completely. Adding the dimension of caste to this bill seems even more dubious. After all, we Indians should avoid this habit of bringing caste in every aspect, else it would continue to hinder the future generations. I sincerely feel that atleast this great fortress of Parliament should be excepted from the demons of reservation and caste. This is absolutely not the way to achieve Women Empowerment in India.

What is the quality of women being elected in Panchayats? Are they really taking their decisions or there is a proxity rule by their spouse? The glaring examples are from Bihar and Rajasthan. We are fooling ourselves by advancing quota system. Scrap them once for all even for men.

Reservations of all kind should be scarped for men and women.Give free basic education to those under low income group. Give higher eduation on merit only. This is the only way we can ensure that influencial politicians dont rule by making their spouse a Chief Minister/Minister/Sarpanch.Reservation to illiterate women/men would ruin the country.

RESERVATION is the key word that needs to be changed (removed) from our political and social lives. what India needs is merit and merit cannot be attained or delivered through reservations. i do feel that women have been deprived from social equality. but this problem cannot call in for reservations. its like an eyewash trying to overlook the root cause of problems releated to the eves.

Women in this country have been deprived of numerous things for centuries. Over years atrocities on them have imbibed insecurities in their upbringing. Till this day, when on one hand India boasts of the unprecedented success of Sunita Williams, simultaneously housewife murdered by her in-laws often hit news headlines. W omen's Reservation Bill in the Parliament is required to voice such issues. Moreover, India is producing young women politicians like Priya Dutt and youngest minister, Agatha Sangma. We should definitely encourage more women participation in Indian politics.

Being a lady myself, I don't support for any kind of reservation for us. Woman may be a weaker sex physically but they are no where lesser in terms of intelligence to man. Let the position held by a person be determined by his/her merit or talent rather than providing any kind of reservation.

UPA II should avoid confortations on Women Bill issue and staggered the 33% in 15 years timein which period OBC,ST,SC, and Minority class women get also educated and come into main stream by providing them sufficent support and encouragements. This might be acceptable to those parties who are opposing Bill for reservation issue. Surendra Joshi. Muscat, Oman

dude what scared me even more is the talk of introducing OBC reservations in the Parliament and assemblied itself ........ what utter rubbish RESERVING SEATS FOR WOMEN IS NOT REQUIRED . WHAT IS REQUIRED IS A RESOLVE BY THE NATIONAL PARTIES TO GIVE 30% TICKETS TO WOMEN CANDIDATES ONLY. THERE ARE ALWAYS WAYS OF CIRCUMVENTING THE POLITICAL EVIL OF RESERVATIONS. BUT THE POLITICAL PARTIES ARE INTENT TO SPREAD IT , INSTEAD OF REMOVING IT.... U WANT TO DIVIDE THE LOK SABHA ITSELF ???

bluevj, The way this would work is in a rotation basis the 545 seats will be split up and each constituency would need to get a women MP elected once every three elections. THere could be more than 33% (even 100%) women in the parliament. THe minimum is 33% No party needs to field a percent of women candidates. However, for certain constiuencies (33%), only women candidates can be fielded. So if you want to win that particular constituency, you need to field a women candidate else forfiet. PS: Pardon my spelling

EQUAL INJUSTICE TO ALL... :) GROW UP... Sorry the cabinet has majority of overgrown... Remove reservation and start implementing things to allocate tickets based on merit. In fact reservation based on caste/creed/sect/sex should be eradicated. It should be completely based on merit. Until that happens all we can hope/pray is GOD BLESS INDIA MORE!

The bill should be passed very urgently. It will, otherwise, lose its grace. Women cannot be made to wait so long, from 1996 to this day. Once it is passed and implemented, women will be able to have their voice in the governance of the country.

With or without consensus there should not be any reservation for womens in lok sabha/assembly elections. Instead giving 33% reservations and getting compliments is not good. Parties should work for grass root problems of women like education, child labour, child marriage etc. Instead of working for poor people it seems congress party is set to enter its name in guiness book of world record by creating histories.

everyone should be elected on the basis of merit, not on the basis of reservation. it is not the question of women. right person should be at the right place whether it is a man or women. reservations will destroy india.

IF IT IS REALITY THAT UPA IS SINCERE FOR TO PASS WOMEN S BILLS. THEN 1ST THEY SHOULD THINK WHY THEY HAVE NOT GIVEN CABINET BIRTH TO MRS. PRENEET KAUR 3RD TIME WINNER FROM PATIALA WITH A MARGIN OF I LAC VOTES NEARLY. SONIA 1ST CARD IN FAVOUR OF WOMEN WAS TO ELECT PRESIDENT. 2ND CARD MRS. MEERA AS A SPEAKER. NOW SHE WANT TO PASS BILL. FIRST OF ALL GIVE CABINET BIRTH TO MRS. PRENEET KAUR A KNOWN PERSONALITY. WHOM PATIALVIS GIVE REGARDS VERY MUCH. THIS WILL PROVE HER SINCERITY IN THIS MATTER.
