Youth killed in police firing in Dehradun
NDTV Correspondent, Saturday July 4, 2009, Dehradun

A 22-year-old MBA student Randhir Singh, on way to take up his first job at the Kotak bank in Dehradun, was shot dead by policemen in Uttarakhand on Friday.

Though the Uttarakhand Police have their own story, Randhir Singh's family in Ghaziabad say it's a case of fake police encounter.

The police say that they were doing routine security checks during President Pratibha Patil's visit, when Randhir and two others fought with a policeman, stole his revolver and tried to run away.

The police says they chased the trio into the Ladpur jungles near Dehradun and when one of them fired, the police fired back and that's what killed Randhir while the other two men got away.

But Randhir's father Ravindra Singh has claimed it's a case of mistaken identity. He said his son was innocent and had gone to Dehradun to work in a bank.

"Ask the police if he was reported in any police station. There was no complaint filed against him. In fact this was the first time he had come here. But now he will never return," Ravindra said.

Randhir Singh's family is in Dehradun now and during the post-mortem, they got into a fight with the police. The family says no one from the police explained the circumstances of Randhir's death to them, and now state Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal is expected to visit them.

Who will protect common people from those gun mongers? Is India a police state or a democracy I wonder.
