The women of drought
Radhika Bordia, Tuesday August 18, 2009, Hardoi

The roots he yanks out of his field are the final blow: "You can see the crops are gone, we needed the rain earlier."

In Hardoi, drought has already set in, upsetting the fragile balance of existence. No one is spared.

In Lalpur village, Kamla  Bai falls at my feet, sobbing, "Please help us".  She is a widow with nine children to feed. The tiny one bigha land she owns has  never really been enough to survive on.  Now even that minimum subsistence has been wooed out.

Kamla takes us to the homes of two other women, also widows, also owners of small plots of land.

Too much rain last year destroyed many homes in this region.  This year, the lack of rain at the right time means more devastation.

Savitri has watched five children die. Poverty and disease took them, she says, leaving her with three children:  "These three are lucky to have survived but now they cry out of hunger. I ask them to wait as there's enough for only the evening meal". Her family owns no land but work on the fields of the bigger farmers. That work doesn't exist...Nor are there any schemes like NREGA here.

And  then , at the extreme end of the chain of vulnerability, there's  Jogan. She has no family, no children, she depends on others in her village to feed her. But with every kitchen now empty, she risks being forgotten.

Hers is perhaps the hardest story to swallow.

Institutions like NDTV and others should come forward to organize a group of young voluteers who should be trained to go to needy people and help with the fund collected through those who have stable earning and are in a position to help financially or through contributing foodgrains. Another effort should be made to unearth horders because hording would be the final blow. How ? Well, as the crops fail, foodgrains would become even more dearer which would effectivey make these poor people with same money but less food to buy. that may result for many to starve. together we can fight it. left alone this drought may trigger a famine as poor people will not be able to buy food. please come forward and help your own countrymen. the agriculture produce of U.P., Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa (states worst hit by the drought) contributes more than 20% to national GDP. they deserve a lot more than what they actually need right now. they are poor and that's not their fault. they do not have resource to be rich. aid never reaches them. most of us eat what they produce and then ridicule them as if we do not need them. attack on mumbai was very unfortunate and that has really made a difference in the security scenario around us due to sustained effort of media and everybody concerned. less than 200 people died. a million people were displaced during kosi river flood. thousands died. many more in other BIMARU states. they shouted, screamed, begged for help. we did but very little. there eyes are still wet, stomach still empty and they are ready to produce more food grains to feed us, if they survive. please help them as much as you can. look around yourself and you will find many in need of your help. you do not need the help of an institution to reach to them. just one sunday make an excursion in to rural areas and find them. they are waiting for you. be their hero. Remember they belong to same India.
